Caffeine works on puffiness, fights free radicals and reduces dark under eye circles and wrinkles around the eyes.

EGCG (Epigallocatechin gallate) is an antioxidant found in green tea and has anti-wrinkle effects and also reduces redness in the skin. It prevents inflammation due to UV rays.

My Thoughts on The Ordinary 5% Caffeine Solution

Before expecting this or any other eye product to work, check whether you’re following the points I’ve mentioned below:

  • Uninterrupted sleep of 7-8 hours (And no, sleeping in the morning and waking up at noon doesn’t count)
  • Eating healthy and drinking enough water (Cutting down on junks, alcohol, smoking)
  • Using SPF around your eyes
  • Not spending the entire day in front of laptop or phone screens. If you have to, get a blue light filter or a good lens.
  • Hydrating the eye area.
  • Are you stressed?

Packaging

The caffeine solution comes in a dark coloured glass bottle that’s UV protected because EGCG is sensitive to light. There is a dropper with white top provided with it so you have a control over the amount of product dispensed.

The entire bottle is enclosed in a white cardboard box that mentions ingredients list and other product details. I love that the packaging is very basic yet elegant.

Since it’s a glass bottle you have to be very careful while travelling. I wrapped it with a bubble wrap because you don’t want to take that kind of a risk.

Texture & Smell

It has a watery serum-like texture that is very pale golden in colour. It gets absorbed quickly but leaves slightly sticky/ tacky feel for a few minutes. I need just one drop to cover both my eye contours so a little goes a very long way.

The Ordinary Caffeine solution has no added fragrance so it’s suitable for people even with sensitive skin and fragrance-loaded eye creams/ serums tend to irritate the undereye area. And it also doesn’t have any sort of prominent smell.

How does it work?

Before moving on to my experience with the product, I’d like to say that I’m a big Ordinary fan but I’ve tried to be unbiased and (I think) I’ve been successful at it. I have used the caffeine solution for 2 months continuously and noticed major improvements in my undereye area.

I won’t give all the credits to the product because I had worked on my lifestyle as well. It helped in slight lightening of my dark circles but never made them disappear.

My main problem is being in front of the screen and sleeping a bit late which I tried to work on but was just a bit successful.

However, it worked really well on puffiness. It made my eye area look brighter and firmer with regular usage. I don’t have tons of fine lines but when you don’t hydrate your undereyes, it starts to look dull which makes you appear older than you really are.

If you have very dry skin or dry under eye area then this solution alone might not be enough! You’ll have to add a layer of moisturizing eye cream over it. But since it doesn’t claim to hydrate, we can’t judge it on that.

Application

I take one drop (as shown in the picture below) on my ring finger, transfer some of it to another ring finger and then massage my eye contours gently. Please make sure you don’t apply it on the lids or right under the eyes. Eye creams and serums are meant to be applied only on the contours of your eyes.

The skin around the eyes is very sensitive so always use your ring fingers as it applies the least amount of pressure.

Mainly, I use it at night because it doesn’t sit very well under makeup, especially concealer.

I am not completely blown away by the caffeine solution like I do with the other products from The Ordinary, like their Glycolic Acid Toner. But this is a decent, affordable eye serum that’d give you a healthier eye area.

It’s not life-changing but if you do make certain lifestyle changes and take proper care of your skin, The Ordinary Caffeine Solution will definitely help.

This very little bottle is going to last me at least a year and no eye serum/cream can beat the price point + quantity of this!

CONCLUSION

The Ordinary 5% Caffeine Solution is a good eye serum for people with not-so-dry eyes that provides brighter and firmer undereye area and also reduces puffiness. It’s cruelty-free, vegan and fragrance-free but doesn’t break your bank. In future, I’d love to try more eye creams to get a fairer idea but for now, this one does the job.

Why You Should Buy The Ordinary 5% Caffeine Solution?

  • Cruelty-free
  • Vegan
  • No added fragrance
  • Lots of quantity at a very cheap price
  • Gives brighter & firmer undereye area
  • Reduces puffiness
  • Convenient & elegant packaging

Why You Should Avoid The Ordinary 5% Caffeine Solution?

  • Won’t miraculously reduce dark circles
  • Glass packaging isn’t travel-friendly
